Nelson B. McDonald

Nelson McDonald’s experience with innovative development models, strategic planning, acquisition due diligence and market intelligence is well recognized throughout the US. McDonald recently completed an assignment as the national director of US sales and marketing for Medallist, an international developer from Sydney, Australia owned by Macquarie Bank and Greg Norman.  Properties developed by Medallist include Wild Heron and Tiburon in Florida, PGA West in California, Savannah Quarters in Savannah, Ga. and Tennessee National in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Laurel Springs AtlantaMcDonald began his remarkable 28-year career in real estate at the Nicklaus Sierra Development Corp., a partnership between Jack Nicklaus and Bob Sierra. He started as controller then became the director of sales and marketing and then project manager. He proved his capabilities in this position by steering the company through economic whitewater and in the process doubled sales during the 1989 recession.

He went on to start Laurel Springs as national developer Terrabrook’s first an upscale-luxury residential community in Atlanta, Ga. McDonald created the brands, business models, and sales and marketing plans.  he moved the development from concept design and initial master planning to a full operation in the first 18 months. In the first two years, Laurel Springs sold 200 homes totaling $133 million, setting a new standard in Atlanta’s real estate market for gated lifestyle communities,

A leader with strong speaking and motivational skills, McDonald has been a featured speaker at the two largest annual conventions in the industry, The National Homebuilders (65,000+) and the AEC systems convention (30,000+). McDonald has served on the National Environmental Council of the Urban Land Institute. He also was actively involved with the Atlanta Home Builders Association and Board of Realtors Board of Directors and served as a judge for award programs across the nation.

Haws Ridge ResortWhile serving as chairman of the Sales and Marketing Council, McDonald was awarded the Best Sales and Marketing Council in the nation. He has also received the National Sales Manager of the Year Award for Region 13. Awarded the Platinum Sales manager award for four consecutive years by the National SMC, he also twice received the prestigious Sales Manager of the Year for the Greater Atlanta metropolitan area.

Although busy with his career and family, Nelson McDonald has always found time for community service and philanthropic work. He has been a volunteer for Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital and considers his work with numerous charitable organizations an important part of his life.

Through his efforts, McDonald has developed nonprofit communications and technology systems to improve nonprofit sector efficiency through E3 Resource Center.  A licensed Real Estate Broker in Georgia, McDonald continues to further his education, having also passed his CPA exam in the top 17 percent nationally and earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Tennessee

McDonald is married to his wife Margo. They have three children and two Jack Russell terriers.

Savannah Quarters, Savannah, GA

A Medallist community with 4,200 homes on 2,650 acres including the gated community of Westbrook, Savannah Quarters has eight production builders and a custom builder group. Started in 2002, there are several neighborhoods and a wide variety of townhomes, villas, TND development, single family homes and commercial parcels. Homes are priced from $150,000 to over $2.4 million.  The commercial area includes over
1 million SF of retail space including a large theater complex set to break ground Fall 2007.

A Greg Norman gated waterfront golf community on 1,450 acres surrounded by the Tennessee river with 1,700 homes from condos in the 200’s to custom homes over $2 million. The marina village with full service restaurants will compliment the 260 acre golf course which held it’s grand opening September 2006.

Country Club of the South  

A Jack Nicklaus golf community. Atlanta, Georgia 735 home gated community with a build-out of $750 million. Roles included sales, financial and project management for the top residential golf community in Atlanta, Georgia. Started 1984 during construction of first 14 homes and completed 1994. Took sales from 22 million to 56 million per year, and then took over project management to finish the community.

Laurel Springs

A Golden Bear Golf club community. The first Westbrook community that became Terrabrook. Established community from start-up handling engineering and land planning and design through completion of the Golf Club and amenities. Sold $133 million first 30 months, price point $350,000 to $1.5 million.
